In recent years there has been little doubt that we live in a VUCA world. The acronym (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) was first used to describe the state of the world after the Cold War and is now widely applied to business and society.
So as the world changes and advances, long structures of society such as education and the education system must respond. They are responsible for equipping our students with the ability to thrive – not just survive – in today’s world.
The Studio School (TSS), powered by All Saints College, does just that. TSS represents a shift from a mainstream, traditional education system to a more personal and practical approach to education.
Studio school dean of teaching and learning Esther Hill said the studio model is about the individual — celebrating difference and diversity — and personalizing pathways.
“While students all earn their WACE, and some an ATAR, learning paths are tailored to each student’s unique interests and abilities,” she said.
“TSS students engage in project-based learning – a teaching and learning method where students learn not only from textbooks or didactic teaching but also by participating in ‘real world’ projects, solving real-world problems and complex questions .”
The Studio School is more of an adult co-working space than a traditional classroom, where students can move freely and work independently or together. The campus is not hidden; it is in the heart of Fremantle, where students can integrate with the community, local businesses, and organizations.
The curriculum is personalized and flexible, where students decide for themselves what they want to learn and how they want to do it, with the support of mentors. Individual interests and passions are central.
Students at The Studio School learn from mentors in relevant sectors with real skills and connections. While teachers facilitate their regular curriculum, students learn on the job by being immersed in the community and experiencing firsthand.
So, how do you know if The Studio School model is right for your child?
Ms. Hill said parents should consider The Studio School as it enables young people to thrive in today’s world.
“Self-efficacy is an important well-being and protective factor for our students. It empowers every young person to thrive by contributing to and engaging with the real world in meaningful ways while developing their skills and interests,” she said.
“The Studio School enables our students to experience education as a seamless transition into the world of work and tertiary learning – connected to the real world, authentic and purposeful.”
The Studio School is an innovative new educational model for curious students in their 10s to 12s who enjoy learning through project work. Registrations for 2023 are now open; visit the website for more information.
