“As part of the annual architecture awards, the People’s Choice Award further engages the public in current vernacular architecture,” said WA State Manager of the Australian Institute of Architects, Adam Johnson-Kain.

“Each year, the housing category entrants are listed, and the public can view the professional project photos and briefings of each project, as well as vote for a favorite to determine the WA People’s Choice Award winner.”

The voting portal provides insight into the results that can be achieved by engaging an architect for new construction, housing projects, renovations, and additions. And each project is documented with numerous professional photos of interiors and exteriors and a brief.

“Not only is it interesting to look at, but it is also extremely valuable for anyone embarking on their new construction or home renovation, providing a variety of design inspiration and visual references to the budding architects,” said Mr. Johnson-Kain.

Many homeowners choose to renovate their existing homes with major additions. This could be for various reasons, such as a love for their neighborhood and community, aversion to the costs associated with buying and selling, or both. This year there are stunning examples of modern additions to California bungalow-style homes, cottages, and bungalows.

These homeowners using architects have achieved benefits such as new modern layouts and features and improved usability in line with the demands of contemporary living, such as open, family-friendly spaces. Better designed and extra usable rooms, more natural light, spacious high ceilings, and improved energy efficiency,

Maintaining key features of the existing home is essential for many homeowners, whether for heritage details or the character of the surrounding neighborhood they initially fell in love with. Preserving facades and existing information replicating and mixing the old with the new so that the whole house feels like one, are all important considerations and have been skillfully realized in the projects in this category.

You can choose your favorite from the 21 houses in the People’s Choice Award this year. Residential projects in the 2022 Western Australia Architecture Awards shortlist of both the Homes (new) and Homes (alterations and additions) categories are eligible for the award.

Voters can also enter for this year’s prize, a $300 State Buildings Gift Card.

After two years of hugely successful virtual awards and presentations, the Australian Institute of Architects will again hold the Exhibition of Entries and Presentation Evening online.

The presentation evening will be streamed live on Thursday, 9th June, at 5.30 pm AWST and can be accessed via the Australian Institute of Architects YouTube channel.
